Palming: Eye Yoga

Eye Yoga: Naturally Relax Your Eyes 🌿

Spending hours in front of screens can lead to eye strain, blurry vision, dry eyes, and even headaches. A natural way to ease these symptoms is to practice eye yoga—a series of gentle exercises that help relax, strengthen, and mobilize the eye muscles.

Eye yoga is part of classical yoga traditions and was popularized in the 20th century by Dr. William Bates. While it doesn’t replace glasses or correct issues like myopia, it has proven useful in reducing eye strain and improving visual comfort, especially for people who work with computers or mobile devices.

What Exercises Does Eye Yoga Include?

  1. PalmingRub your hands together until warm, then gently place them over your closed eyes for 30 seconds to 1 minute. The warmth helps relax the eye muscles and calm the nervous system. You can repeat this 2–3 times a day.

  2. Conscious BlinkingIntentionally blink every 4–5 seconds to keep your eyes lubricated—something we often forget to do when using screens.

  3. Figure-Eight Eye MovementSlowly move your eyes to trace an imaginary horizontal “8.” Do this for 30 seconds in each direction to maintain ocular flexibility.

  4. Near and Far FocusAlternate your focus between a finger held in front of your nose and an object several meters away. This exercises your focusing ability and helps prevent eye fatigue.

How Often to Do It

You can practice eye yoga for a few minutes a day in short sessions, especially during work breaks. It’s safe, requires no equipment, and can easily be incorporated into your wellness routine. Plus, it has no contraindications.
